What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations, with its origins rooted in the traditions of the medieval stonemasons who built our cathedrals and castles.
Today, it brings together men from all walks of life who share common values, a desire for personal growth and a commitment to supporting their communities.
Our Origins
Modern Freemasonry traces its roots to the medieval stonemasons. These craftsmen travelled widely for work and developed ways to prove their skills using signs, grips and words to distinguish themselves from unqualified builders.
Over time, their lodges began admitting men who were not stonemasons – “free masons” – and the focus shifted from trade skills to building a better society based on friendship, integrity and moral principles.
Freemasons still use the stonemason’s tools symbolically today, as reminders of how we can improve ourselves and contribute positively to the world around us.
What Freemasonry Means to Our Members
Freemasonry means something different to every member:
• For some, it’s about friendship and meeting people from many different backgrounds.
• For others, it’s about charity and supporting deserving causes.
• For many, it’s an enjoyable pastime that provides opportunities to grow personally and develop confidence, discipline and leadership.
Freemasonry offers a structure that helps good men become better – at home, at work and in their communities.
Our Four Principles
Integrity
Freemasonry encourages members to act honestly, make good choices and follow the right path, even when it is not the easiest.
The familiar structure and ceremonies of our meetings help reinforce these values in daily life.
Friendship
Freemasonry is an excellent way to make new friends, often for life. Members come from many backgrounds and professions, creating a unique diversity and supportive camaraderie that helps us through life’s challenges.
Respect
Freemasonry values the things that unite us rather than those that divide us. Members learn to look beyond differences such as race, religion or background and to approach others with an open mind.
Service
Service to others is at the heart of Freemasonry. Whether through fundraising, volunteering or community support, members make valuable contributions by giving their time, skills and resources.
Charity & Community
Charity has been central to Freemasonry from its earliest days. Freemasons support a wide range of causes at local, national and international levels.
In 2024 alone, Freemasons donated more than £51 million to good causes.
In South Wales, members are particularly active – from supporting food banks to raising funds, organising community events and helping vulnerable people.
Openness & Inclusivity
Freemasonry welcomes men of all religions, races and backgrounds.
We do not discuss politics or religion in lodge, and we are committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and respect.
There are also two separate Grand Lodges specifically for women, ensuring that Freemasonry is accessible to everyone.
That is the formal explanation of Freemasonry.
It does not always capture what it feels like to be part of it today.
