What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations. It encourages members to become better people through integrity, friendship, respect and service.

No. Freemasonry is not a religion and is open to men of all faiths. It requires a belief in a Supreme Being, but it is completely non-denominational and not a substitute for religion.

No. You do not need to be invited. Most modern members take the first step themselves by making an enquiry, exactly as you can.

Any good man aged 18 or over who believes in a Supreme Being, is of good character, and wishes to improve himself and support his community is welcome to join.

Costs vary between Lodges, but typically include annual membership fees and optional dining costs. Charity donations are always voluntary and never expected beyond your means.

Meetings include short, meaningful ceremonies that teach moral lessons, followed by a friendly meal known as the Festive Board. The atmosphere is structured, welcoming, and enjoyable.

Yes. Many members join Freemasonry without knowing anyone beforehand. We will arrange a relaxed, informal chat so you can meet us and ask questions.

Llanfair Lodge meets monthly at the Cardiff Masonic Hall on Guildford Street, except during the summer recess. Members also meet informally at other times.

No. Charitable giving is entirely voluntary. There is no minimum expectation, and you should only give if and when you feel able.

No. Freemasonry is not secret.
Our buildings, aims, values, and community work are public. We simply continue traditional ceremonies and signs from our stonemason heritage.
